Georgia – Birthplace of Wine
Georgia's strategic geographic location was not the country's only appeal to foreign
invaders. Georgian land is one that is rich and fertile, producing a wide variety
of agricultural products, including grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts. In fact,
the word "Georgia" is translated to "agriculture" in old Greek. Throughout history,
Georgians have pioneered new agricultural techniques and shared innovations with
foreign visitors, spreading Georgian agricultural influence across several continents.
Cornerstone to the agricultural and cultural climate of Georgia is the cultivation
and fermentation of grapes. Ancient Georgians are credited as the first winemakers,
producing evidence of winemaking carbon dated back over 8,000 years. Georgia is
home to over 500 varieties of indigenous grapes. Georgian wines have won countless
international awards and been celebrated by Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and
Franklin D. Rosevelt.
